Spaihts Writes Mummy Reboot

April 5, 2012

The Darkest Hour” and early “Prometheus” writer Jon Spaihts has been hired to pen a reboot of The Mummy Film Franchise says Variety.

Stephen Sommers called action on the action packed and fun first film in 1999 which starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz–The pic was a reboot of the classic Universal Monsters series from the 30’s and 40’s.

Reaction from audiences on the two subsequent sequels in The Mummy Returns in 2001 and
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in ’08 was quite muted–though all three pics grossed over $400 million worldwide.

Sean Daniel will return to produce this new version which will take the franchise in a different direction…by going back.

I see it as the sort of opportunity I had with ‘Prometheus’: to go back to a franchise’s roots in dark, scary source material and simultaneously open it up to an epic scale we haven’t seen before” explains Spaihts.
