Killer Joe Gets An NC-17 Rating

March 2, 2012

Director William Friedkin‘s adaptation of Tracy Letts darkly comic story Killer Joe has been given an NC-17 rating by the Motion Picture Association of America reports Deadline.

The story follows a drug-dealing brother (Emile Hirsch) and sister (Juno Temple) who plot the death of their mother (Gina Gershon) for the insurance money and hire “Killer Joe” Cooper (Matthew McConaughey), a cop and contract killer, to do the deed.

The film premiered in Venice and Toronto last year to fairly good reviews and has won its U.S. distribution from LD Entertainment. The company is expected to appeal the rating which was handed out for “graphic aberrant content involving violence and sexuality, and a scene of brutality“.

Hitfix says the film is “casually violent, kinkily erotic and features Gina Gershon doing inappropriate things with fried chicken.”—Dweep….! The reviewer says that he couldn’t recall anything in the film that might warrant the rating.

Friedkin is best known for directing classics The Exorcist and The French Connection.

Scott Einbinder and Nicolas Chartier produced Killer Joe.
